King Cakes

The start of the Mardi Gras season on January 6 is marked by the Epiphany, or Little Christmas, the day the three Kings found Baby Jesus. In New Orleans, King Cakes are baked in honor of the three Kings and the finding of baby Jesus.

King Cakes are oval in shape to show the unity of Christians. They are decorated in traditional Mardi gras colors: Green representing Faith; Gold representing Power; Purple representing Justice. Tucked away inside the cake is a plastic figurine which represents the baby Jesus.

New Orleans tradition has evolved to obligate the person who "finds the baby" to host the next seasonal party, as well as crown the person "King" for the day.

Start this local tradition today in your home, class, or office. King Cake season ends on Fat Tuesday, the day before Lent.
